My best friend.
One day, I decided I wanted a dog. I went to the pound.
I had planned on getting a full size lab and went in looking for one, but I didn't see any.
I did see two other dogs that I liked.
One was this cute little brown puppy.
The other one was this cute, but sad, looking hound dog puppy.
I figured that the little brown puppy would have no problem getting adopted,
but this hound dog!
I was worried that someone else may not take it.
"You sure this is the one you want?" the woman at the counter asked me.
"Yeah", I said.
I must have hesitated a bit because the lady at the desk then said,
"I don't think you are really sure about this. Maybe you should come back tomorrow ."
She insisted.
I came back the next day and for some reason took another look at the little brown dog.
I took her outside to the "get to know each other" area.
The guy there noticed her "pointing" with one paw up in the air and he told me that she was going to be a very smart dog.
I decided to take her after all.
The hound dog puppy would make it on his personality - which was adorable.
The woman at the desk agreed.
I was working that day, installing real estate signs, and to my delight
my new little friend was absolutely, wonderfully well-behaved in my truck all day.
I hadn't named her yet because I had wanted to make sure I had the "right" name.
A couple of days later I was driving over Highway 17
and it dawned on me how lucky I was to have found this cute little dog and how lucky she was
for that woman at the desk who was perceptive enough to know my wants better than I had.
Lucky, I thought. That would be her name.
One of the first things I taught Lucky to do was to sit still even with something silly on her head.
Just long enough for me to focus...
Liesl, also known as "Sits-With-Paws-Crossed" met Lucky on the beach November 9th, 1992
while she was taking her person out for a walk.
She was a Gump's puppy, when Gumps occupied the north side of Post Street betwen Stockton and Grant in San Francisco.
The department store featured animals from the SPCA in its windows at Christmastime.
She was chosen from the others for the simple reason that she was adorable.
With her primary breeds identified possibly as German Shepherd and Rotweiller,
it was decided to give her a German name.
She was named Liesl after the eldest Von Trapp daughter from The Sound of Music.
Thanks to that chance meeting on the beach,
Lucky and Liesl and their persons are all living happily ever after.
Sadly to say, Liesl's human father, passed away December 15th, 2001, followed 6 months later by the passing of Liesl, June 8th, 2002.
My sweet Lucky passed away March 13th, 2004.
They all left us at 2:40 pm on a Saturday.
A note from Lucky: My dad is a pretty creative guy. He plays music, is on several CD's, creates CASTAWAYS , and (pant, pant) beautiful landscapes
(that he lets me and Liesl help him fertilize).
Please check out his web page and see what he does when he isn't playing with us.
Take me to my masters home page. Woof.
Do you want to see more photos? Yes, there are more!!
Write dad and let him know what you think!
